But if you are inclined to appreciate this type of film, The Age of Innocence is practically perfect. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 20, 2018. The continental cadences of her English and the very way she moves through this world, careful yet uncalculated, sets her apart from this society where appearances are all, and the hope and idealism projected in the dazzling blue eyes and bright smiles of the early scenes are lost as she’s resigned to disappointment in this world later in the film. Because Martin Scorsese made his reputation with movies that were set in the poor neighborhoods of Mean Streets and Taxi Driver or the violent world of the mob, it was originally baffling to the public that he would attempt Edith Wharton's "The Innocent Age", set in the upper class society of 1870's New York. Only a director like Scorsese- steeped in cinema--in the Hitchcock tradition--using the camera to tell the story--could give this novel its pace on the screen and constantly fill our eyes with a feast of gorgeous images to make this one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen---every shot is a work of art.-------the actors are perfect in their roles (with the possible exception of a miscast Ryder)---the hypocrisy and double standards of the age and class (which can still exist today) is artfully exposed---the scene in the carriage in which Day-Lewis unbuttons Pheiffer's glove and kisses her wrist is the most sexy scene I have ever seen-----forget nudity etc,-------repressed love-----shown in glances------tentative touches------trembles of heart and hand---------far exceed the need for explicitness we see in other films which do not have half the imact- compared to this achingly touching story of longing and loss. Ryder straddles that line beautifully in her performance, projecting an earnest naïveté while ruthlessly playing social games to control Newland. Day-Lewis is superb as the idealist only aware of his complicity when he sees it refracted through the experience of Ellen, who has no devotion to society’s rules and no respect for such demands for appearances.
